Studio at Rest

 September and October in the small community of Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of my favorite times of year. The sunlight is crisp, the trade winds coming through have bounced off of our gigantic mountain-volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea offering brisk delightful breezes. And, it is the perfect time to finalize projects before winter.  Getting cuttings into pots, setting up two small greenhouses for winter rooting, raking up leaves and cutting back older fronds of our giant Hapu'u ferns and turning them into mulch.  All that to say, my studio has essentially looked the same for nearly two months. There are ideas afloat -- numerous collections of color/texture/subject --- but no new collage to share.  The fallow-time is as important as the weeks where scissors and glue dominate.

When we moved into our new home in Volcano we realized the area was rich with many Hawaii artists and that we'd be in good company. Our first priority was building a space similar to what we each had prior to 2018. We drew a sketch and our contractor built it. Pictures below are only of Lunel's half but Phil has an even bigger space with lots of tools for all his art.  (Remember to click on "show more")

Inspired By A Book!

 I am a member of a small book group here in the small community of Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Recently one of our books was called "Cloud Cuckoo Land" by Doerr. It was one of the best books I've ever read and was so evocative in both language and imagery, and brilliant story-telling, it inspired me to attempt a large 20x30" collage. 

As I have time - I'll provide a synopsis -- in the meantime I challenge you to look it up, read the reviews and read it.

Thanks for visiting this older blog I began in 2012 to share my artistic adventure. A lot has happened since that time.

Our home and contents were destroyed in May 2018 turning our sweet retirement living upside down. We have relocated and spent the last year re-building our lives and doing some creative additions to the charming home we purchased in the forests around the village of Volcano, about five miles from Kilauea crater.

What follows are examples of my former art-life -- creating assemblages.  Now, in 2020, my new direction is collage -- but with all the life-changes I am focusing on more private activities.
